In a renew effort at increasing the conciousness of the populace on COVID-19 pandemic, members of the NECOR have developed an Integrated and Inclusive Awareness Model ( IIAM)
This came as the outcome of the weekly online Zoom webinar meeting held on Tuesday 7th April, 2020 among the participants.
It is no longer a fallacy that COVID-19 has been declared as the dreaded disease that can ever imagine in the history of humanity. This assertion give credence to World Health Organization (WHO) declaration that COVID-19 is "Emergency Disease" with about 1.4 million index case, 83,000 death and more than 300,000 people have recovered worldwide as at 8th of April, 2020. This alarming rate called for aggressive integrated and Inclusive sensitization and awareness campaign especially among the vulnerable at the grassroot levels.
Thus, collaboration with stakeholders cannot be neglected.
This IIEM, will facilitate interaction with relevant stakeholders with determination to abreast the world with latest information on precautionary, preventive and awareness strategies.
It is hope that this will increase the conciousness of the people on the measures to curb the spread of the disease.
The online webinar zoom meeting offers great opportunity to tap from the experience of staff of National Orientation Agency (NOA) in person of Mr Faleti on the approach being adopted by the agency. He informed the participants that the agancy has deployed staff from grade level 13 and above to variou communities to complement the effort of the health service providers to educate the masses on COVID-19 prevalence. He used the occasion to share his ordeal at the popular regional market in South West Nigeria and his report has since been forwarded to appropriate quarter for necessary action.
Below are key variables of the INTEGRATED AND INCLUSIVE AWARENESS MODEL (IIAM)
Individual, house to house and street campaign is applauded. The executive of landlords association/ Estate administrators, the community heads, the local government officials should be at the forefront of this campaign. This was upheld in view of the ongoing lockdown on social gathering with restriction being observed in some countries.
Another component of IIAM is the application of Mass media through the use of radio and television in passing across messages in form of giggles, slogans in reaching communities
at the grassroot levels especially where there is little or no access to print media and internet connectivity. Indigenous knowledge and local language should be used as a medium of communication.
These should be complemented with communication through social media platform such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram considered the fact that majority of people at home are user of this service. In the light of the aforementioned, NECOR has designed electronic flier to be sent to reach millions of people with a view to appraise them of the symptoms and preventive measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19.
